Do men and women invest differently?
When it comes to investing, apparently, men are from Mars and women are from Venus. In his "Getting Going" column for the Wall Street Journal, Jonathan Clements highlights the various ways that men and women invest differently. For example, men tend to take on more risk and trade more often than women. In general, men keep more of their portfolio in stocks, favor riskier stock strategies, and tend to be more confident in their trading prowess (which leads to over-trading).
So what should a married couple do if the husband wants to invest the family's nest egg in risky stocks, while the wife prefers the relative comfort of bonds? According to Clements, one solution might be to split the portfolio 50/50: "Can't agree with your husband on investing? Divvy up the family portfolio. You can take half the money and buy bonds. He can take the other half and invest in stocks. Between you, you'll have a well-diversified portfolio..."
