Dutch Tulips & American Bubbles

Is the U.S. economy locked into a pernicious cycle of financial bubbles? That's the premise of former venture capitalist Eric Janszen, who now runs the successful Web site iTulip.com. In the cover story for the February 2008 issue of Harper's Magazine, Janszen warns of a possible bubble forming within the alternative energy sector and elaborates on his broader thesis of how and why bubbles continue to form within the U.S. economy -- despite the negative fallout from the dot-com crash and the subprime mortgage mess.

Even if you don't buy into the idea that the next bubble within the U.S. economy is already forming, the iTulip.com site is a rich source of commentary and discussion about the bubble in the U.S. housing market. There are also some great quotes on the site, like this one from John Kenneth Galbraith: "Economics exists to make astrology look respectable." And, of course, there's a link to a book recently co-authored by Janszen, America's Bubble Economy.
