Today’s post is dedicated to my dad, Denny Overby, on a big day in his career: his hometown baseball field in Chetek, Wisconsin, is being re-named Denny Overby Field this weekend in honor of the town’s favorite baseball son.
As this article in the Chetek Alert describes, my dad was a blazin’ lefty pitcher, recruited fresh out of high school to play for the Milwaukee Braves. He got noticed as the player with the most potential in the National League and was given the largest signing bonus of any player at the time.
Unfortunately, he developed pain in his left shoulder, which turned out to be a rotator cuff injury. Nowadays it would take a simple surgery to fix, but back then this injury was career-ending. After two years in the big leagues, he stepped down from the professional mound, went back to college and ultimately became a baseball and basketball coach and mentor to thousands of kids in his old hometown.
I have never heard my father say “what if”; for that I have the utmost respect. He has always been very content in his choice of work. A good work friend of mine, after reading the newspaper article on my dad, sent me an email - I think this sentence from its sums up the story well:
“You and I know people in our business that measure success with $$$, but we also know that in the long run that's the wrong way to keep score.”
I can’t say enough in praise of my dad: his leadership, his humility, his dedication to teaching and his absolute love of the game. My brother and I were privileged enough to get to play for him in high school. To this day that thrill is still a highlight of my world.
He’s taught me so much about how to act on and off the field. Dad, congratulations! You deserve this honor and so much more.
Best,
Brian Overby
