All Eyes on Earnings Season
With all the market jitters these days, the upcoming earnings season promises to be anything but sleepy. Investors and traders will be scouring those numbers carefully for clues as to which stocks are holding strong fundamentally, and which look simply full of hot air.
You can get the lay of the earnings landscape by going to Quotes + Research > Earnings Calendar. (Don't forget to login first.) Here you can look up scheduled earnings for every trading day for weeks in advance, plus get a peek at earnings surprises, upgrades and downgrades, and so on.
WD-40 Co. (WDFC) kicked the season off nicely with a strong showing last Wednesday, but the action really starts in mid-July into the end of the month. Standouts include IBM announcing on Monday 7/19, Apple (AAPL) and Goldman Sachs (GS) on Tuesday 7/20, and Coca-Cola (KO), Altria (MO) and eBay (EBAY) later in the week.
If you're an options trader, stay especially alert. Earnings announcements tend to make stock prices bumpy, and those bumps depend on whether the earnings announced are good or bad, or - more to the point - whether that good or bad news is unexpected or already priced in. Those bumps can ripple into your options trades, so watch out and plan ahead.
Here's to strong 2Q earnings - and to your success in trading 'em!
