Fun money miscellany

I’ve got a bookmark file of blog-worthy finds – everything from great financial reads to other interesting or eye-opening tidbits. Here are the latest links from that treasure trove:

Do you mourn the passing of the paper stock certificate? Slate’s TheBigMoney offers this great slideshow of the most cool and collectible certificates going, plus info on how to buy them at Oneshare.com. Holiday gift for a stock nut, anyone? I’ve found that one share of Disney stock, framed, makes a great gift for a new baby’s room.

Speaking of great gifts, what about a “stadium-seat sports mortgage”? The WSJ reports about a new program to buy a stadium seat on a long-term, installment basis, much like you’d pay for a house. Trade in that underwater beach house for some real-estate that’ll give you happiness reliably, summer after summer. ;-)

I know one artwork most investors would rather not have in their living rooms: this amazing sculpture of a jet-packing bull pinioning Bernie Madoff violently to a wall. Yes, really. It’s called “What You See Might Not Be Real” by Chinese artist Chen Wenling, and it’s on display now in a Beijing gallery.

I hadn’t realized there were so many hemp fans among you until my recent post about “hemp concrete”. (I wonder what other green-tech wonders could present investing opportunities, as the push for green technologies and U.S.-based manufacturing in that sector grows? If you’re in that camp, you might enjoy this Portfolio article about hemp manufacturer Naturally Advanced Technologies striking a big deal with Hanes.

Last but not least, I’ve enjoyed – and benefited from – listening to every segment of NPR’s Planet Money series on “The Giant Pool of Money”, explaining the financial crisis in layman’s terms. The latest episode brings listeners up-to-date on current events, always with a great sense of humor and an incredible ability to explain details without resorting to jargon.

What great financial finds are you bookmarking lately?
