What a trillion bucks looks like

No sooner did I blog about great financial infographics, did I stumble on a few more excellent ones.

If you’re struggling (like most of us) to wrap your mind around the gi-normous numbers attached to the recent bailouts, the trade deficit, the size of Madoff’s Ponzi scheme and so on – CNBC did a fantastic series of illustrations making these huge numbers from the financial headlines more tangible. If you want to see Bill Gates’ $40B in net worth stretch from Seattle to Miami (when denominated in one-dollar bills), well, here’s your big chance!

If you’re up for an even more fascinating comparison, Barry Ritholtz shared this Billion Dollar Gram (courtesy of the infographics blog Information is Beautiful). It shows the relative size of big categories of spending or revenue, and color-codes them by their use. It may surprise you, for example, to see that the global illegal drug market ($320MM) is roughly the same size as Wal-Mart’s annual revenues ($352MM), and both are only slightly smaller than global worldwide advertising spending ($386MM).

What about you guys – found any excellent visualizations of financial stats out there? If so, please do share ‘em here!

How about one trillion relative to time.
One million seconds = 11.5 days

One billion seconds = about 31.7 years

One trillion seconds = 31,700 years

Enjoyed your post on madeda wine.  Hope this year is a good one.

Now that really puts the numbers in perspective, Montana. Thanks for sharing - and thanks, too, for the compliment on Makeda Wine. I have a feeling this year's crop will be our best yet!
