Hallelujah, coffee is good for you!

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you know the BigDog LOVES coffee. (Check out my posts on TK's office coffee machines, Angelina and Appolonia, Consumer Reports’ survey on the best cheap coffees, even a post on caffeinated soap.)

So I was psyched to see “Read this over coffee” by Judy Foreman in The Los Angeles Times. Recent studies show coffee’s bad medical reputation was undeserved. Lots of older medical studies conflated the effects of smoking with coffee – since the two used to go hand-and-hand so much. Now we know coffee might actually protect again liver cancer, diabetes, cirrhosis and Parkinson’s disease.

Interesting factoid from the article: unfiltered coffee from French presses apparently includes an ingredient that boosts “bad” cholesterol – so break out the espresso, diner-drip machines and stovetop brewers and have an extra cup in celebration!

It seems that every other year or so  there is a study that comes out that ay it's bad for you, then a new one comes out that says it's good or at least non-harmful, then back to bad, etc.  I'll just keep drinking it and when I die, hopefully a long time from now, they can determine if it was because of the coffee I drank or not...:0)

Thanks Big Dog.  I use a stainless steel French Press every morning.  And I just love it.  Didnt know it would help me.

It costs me 75 bucks but it will last forever.  I was always breaking the pots and got tired of replacing them.

Not that I ever listened to "latest medical research results" (that would be a very boring life, would not it be?), but after reading your post I had yet another double portion out of press and chased it with Dominican cigar.
(Yup, I can drink coffee at midnight, sleep is overrated :)

Here's to vices, DavidDT! I'm with you all - I don't really pay much attention to these seesaw health reports, only when they conveniently confirm something I already consume a ton of, like delicious coffee. In fact, I'm enjoying a little espresso pick-me-up as I type this...a toast to the good brew, whether it's good-for-you or not!

Moderation is the key to consuming anything, coffee, scotch, green beans, etc.  It is OK to have a cup when you first get up and then another before break time.  Of course one or two at break and another before lunch - - you get the idea.  But sipping all day long is just too much.

I drink so much coffee that I would beat Juan Valdez in a smackdown. A gallon a day keeps the undertaker away

Totally, Haymore, although I was grateful for a little good news about coffee-drinking because I'm really not very moderate anymore. I wouldn't go toe-to-toe with goldensax22, but I do like a screamingly strong espresso several times a day, including at times when most people are sleeping.
