So here’s one of those tales of serendipity that are so fun to tell: the story of the waiter-turned-broker-trainee.

But I’ll begin at the beginning. The last time I was in Charlotte we all ate dinner at a great restaurant called Antonio’s. As you know from previous posts on my blog (like my quest for a decent haircut from awhile back), I try to keep my eyes and ears open as I’m walking around in the world, always looking for people who know how to deliver great service. Sometimes I take a lesson from their example back to the office, and sometimes we’re so impressed by somebody that we offer him or her a job.

That meal was a prime example of the job-offering scenario. Here we were, a waiter’s potential nightmare - a huge group of wise-cracking stockbrokers, joking and disorganized and giving him the business all throughout – and our waiter Christian handled us like a champ, just delivering excellent service under pressure. We were so impressed I slipped him a business card on the way out the door and said: If you ever want to try becoming a broker, make sure you call us first.

He’s since given me two calls and had an interview with John Dominic, our VP of Brokerage Operations and Trading. He’s going to school full-time now during the days, but we’ve agreed to keep in touch about a summer internship and maybe more as he wraps up his degree.

Christian, if you wanted assurance that we’re eager to snatch you up, here’s your proof! Service is key to us, and we’re always happy to add a natural to our ranks.
