Friday Community shout-out!

star_mosaic.jpgPeople: have you ever been so psyched to see the tail-end of a week? Congratulations, we survived a wild one. Let’s just hope all the investment bankers are too pooped over the weekend to come out with some more news-waves this Sunday.

I don’t need to tell you what the biggest headlines were this week. This week’s TK Community tour seeks out how you all are, individually and collectively, processing the historic developments of this week.

As I’ve been chatting, emailing and comment-trading with folks this week, I was reminded yet again how smart, tough, critically engaged, and level-headed you guys are. When we’ve ridden out all the bumps, I’m sure you will emerge on the other side champs – and you’re champs now in my book!

Spshapiro kicked off an interesting blog discussion on investing vs. gambling, touching on one of the week’s big themes: recent events have made lots of us feel we can’t quite assess the odds of the investing game.

Running_with_Scissors had a surprisingly good, if stressful week – check out this post entitled “Information Sources that Saved my Wealth”. It also gives a nice shout-out to Snowman, RetireOnTime and yours truly – thanks! It’s great to hear we can help each other work through these tough times with constructive advice and info.

Meanwhile, Recycle speaks for a lot of us with this blog post: “Anyone else feeling pain?” Despite the blood-letting, Recycle’s got his head screwed on straight, as do commenting-compadres K-Man and Locogmac. We’re rooting for you!

Newcomer Andrea seems to have had a good week – as I write this, her 6-month performance stats stand at 77% down, but she’s posting a 4% upside for the month and almost 12% gain for the last 5 days. Congratulations, Andrea! I think a great way to close out this post is to quote the last line of her blog post, “It has been a long process”: “I have finally learned to put my emotions behind me, making it easier to cut my losses and run with gains. I believe emotions are what make the market run....do u agree?” To which Snowman sagely replied: “Emotions are what makes us all run! Being aware of them is important.” Amen to that!

Be nice to yourselves this weekend, folks. Try not to overdose on financial news; do something fun with your honey. We’ll see you all back in the saddle come Monday…

When I woke up this morning, I was an ostrich!  I almost decided not to look at the market at all today!  (I drove my 401K into a massive ultra-short position in my 401K in fear of money markets.)  So I was afraid to look.  I decided I better come to TradeKing and get some good vibes from the great people at the community!

BigDog you are so right.  My 401K may be 20K down when the NAV posts after close, but we and I have SURVIVED!  Whoohoo!  I took profits on yesterday's short posititions in my TK account getting within $500 of recovering all my losses for the year!  (My theme for the week seems to have been getting out with smoke on my heels.)

I never thought I could be so happy with a broker or an investing online community.

I wish everyone good times on the weekend and good fortune going forward!

I could not believe how wide the spreads increased on SPY and other liquid products! Market makers must have went double wide on everything. With these wide swings each day it was harder to hedge with selling SEPT options but the inverse ETFS worked great. I bet alot of option traders got caught on Friday thinking their options would expire worthless as the market roared. It was a week to remember for sure..

Sounds like you both rolled with the market's punches last week - glad to hear it! Here's hoping for another good week for you this time around (and maybe a little less eventful, too).
