If you're not the biggest fan of August, you might get a kick out of this Slate article by David Plotz. Succinctly titled "August: Let's Get Rid of It", he makes a surprisingly cogent case for the month as a backwater of manufactured news, wild weather in many parts of the world (especially ours in South Florida), and a time when so much of the world is on vacation or otherwise distracted that it is, as Plotz puts it, "a popular month for coups and violent crime".
Plotz isn't alone in his August-hating. When I Googled the phrase "August sucks" a hefty 3,700+ sites came up as results. Maybe he's right in suggesting we trim August down on our collective calendars for good?
