China IPOs and the Beijing Olympics

beijing-olympics-logo.jpgSo, quick straw poll: how many of you are planning on staying glued to your televisions for the Beijing Olympics?

I know I’ll be tuning in. I’ve always been an Olympics fan, and with all the extra fanfare surrounding the Beijing Olympics, this event promises big. Truth be told, I’m almost as interested in glimpses of China in this world-leadership role as I am hungry for the sports side of things.

Interesting sidebar: did you catch this WSJ article a few weeks back on a fresh crop of Chinese IPOs coming to the NYSE? Newcomers to the NYSE include China Distance Education Holdings Ltd. (DL) and China Mass Media International Advertising Corp. (CMM), breaking a hiatus since the last Chinese IPO on this exchange, ATA Inc. (ATAI), which went public last January. The Journal claims there are more in the near-term pipeline, too, most notably GCL Silicon Technology Holdings Inc. (GCL). As usual, I’m keeping one eye trained on the Journal for new stories, the other on Seeking Alpha’s excellent China section. For example, I liked Edward Janeck’s post, simply titled “The Case for Buying China Now” – this despite a recent 54% drop in the Shanghai Index since October 2007.

Talk to me, people! If you’ve spied a great article recently on China, whether Olympics-or stock-related, I’d love to catch up on my reading.

I'm usually a big olympics fan, but I have to be honest in saying that I am staging a bit of a mini protest this year. I'll probably catch the results on the news or read them online of some favorite sports, and my wife will inevitably be glued watching gymnastics. However, while no-one in China may give a hoot about me, I just don't agree with a lot of things going on over there.

I can't really do much about it, but I'll try in my own way to support those who can't or haven't been allowed to do so themselves by the Chinese government. I thought in the beginning when Tibet was front and center that it may force some real change, but once the money started going blind and rolling into Beijing on a white tiger, nobody seemed to care anymore. So in my own small way, I can at least know 'I' did something.

I'm sure I'll watch some of the events, but for some reason, the olympics just aren't as big of a deal to me now as they were when I was growing up.    I'll never forget tuning into  the 1984 olympics when I was a wee lad (9 years old) and watching Mary Lou Retton on the vault - that was unbelieveable.

There was an article several months back in a Chinese Business Newspaper (The Standard) that talked about how sales of Whiskey in China are on the rise

I've always wanted to visit China.  It's definitely on my top 5 of foreign places I would like to visit someday (along with Russia).   When the time comes, it will be nice to know I can grab a Jack-7 while I'm there.

I enjoyed reading this article in the WSJ a couple weeks ago.   It talks about how if your a CEO doing business in China - you better be at the Olympics.

There's a paragraph in there that says if you want to be important in business there over the next 20 years,  people in China are going to ask if you attended the games,  and if not,  why.

Big Dog - it might not be to late to make travel arrangements ;)

Guys, thanks for the great comments - and the investment ideas!

I'm with you, UPod, when you say that Olympics-watching is really purest when you're a kid. I'll tune in, I'm sure, in the coming weeks, but probably not with the same feverish intensity I had back in my grade-school days for the Olympics.

Corbin2, I hear you on opting out, too. On top of more serious civil rights issues, I find it disconcerting how many of the athletes are wearing masks just to breathe without danger in Beijing - see http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/06/sports/olympics/06masks.html?_r=1&scp=3&sq=olympics%20masks&st=cse&oref=slogin
Hopefully the international scrutiny the Olympics always brings will make it clear what issues China needs to address as a nation moving forward.

Oh, UPod, another thing: even though I can't make it to China, we've got Anthony Hsieh, a friend and former TK board member, on the ground in Beijing. He just wrote all of us last night to say how
amazing the trip has been so far. So I'll just have to borrow all his anecdotes in future years when I'm quizzed about "my" trip to Beijing someday...

I wonder what Putin and Bush were talking about during the opening ceremonies; they sat right next to each other.  I'm sure they weren't talking about the olympics.
