I am very new to the stock market. I've been reading many books about investing, and peruse various financial/news web sites, but was wondering if anyone has any advice as far as good periodicals to keep current with related to where the world in general is going. As far as political policies, social undercurrents that may affect markets or industries, etc. Do any of you subscribe to The Economist, or Financial Times, or any of those? Are the worth the price? Or is just keeping up with the financial and news sections of Google and Yahoo enough?

I mainly keep up with the news on google and a few newpaper sites both here and in Europe,  I do read sites like The Economist but only what I am able to see for free.  The only subscription I have is to The Kirk Report.  The reeason for that supscription is b/c it helps me view the market in a different way and very informative.  Also, he provides a list of links ever week to news and market related info.  To me it was worth buying a membership just for someone posting all that stuff on a regular basis.  Saves me alot of time.  You don't have to have a membership to view most of the site.

Until last year, I read Barron's almost cover to cover each weekend.  I would not invest in anything 'touted' at the time of the tout, but for provoking thought and ideas for future investment, I got more from them than any other place over the last thirty years.  I only stopped my subscription due to their inability to insure regular delivery after many attempts to correct the situation.

It's not really a periodical, and may be one of the websites you've already visited, but I like a lot of the articles and commentary on Seeking Alpha: http://seekingalpha.com/ Some of the contributors there are stock brokers and/or write financial columns etc. There are a lot of different viewpoints and the quality varies quite a bit, though there are a lot of good ones to choose from. Our library has some pretty good resources as well, and quite a few of them are even online as electronic resources. I have only begun to explore that, however. I've used Morningstar's resources online through the library website and I really like them so far/ There are another dozen or so I'll need to check out soon.
