I am passionate about movies and I would like to compile a list of all publically traded symbols that relate to film production and distribution.  Some are easy -- like MGM.  Others are part of conglomerates, like Universal Pictures (GE).

Right now the entertainment stocks are down (writers strike).  But they will rise again.  Anyone wanna join me?

Hi Seed Man - Within yahoo finance, your can group stocks by sectors and industries. Here's a link to stocks in the "Movie Productions, Theaters" industry.  You can also break it down further by separating public companies from private foreign companies.   Hopefully this helps your quest.

This is interesting! I did an analysis of MVL just about a week ago and came up with the following information.

Movie        Release      Direction
X-men 1     7-14-2000   Down
DareDevil   2-14-2003    Up
X-men 2     5-2-2003     Up
Hulk          6-20-2003   Down
Elektra      1-14-2005    Down
X-men 3     5-26-2006   Side
Hulk 2.0    6-13-2008    Down
IronMan     5-2-2008     Up

So apparently there is some market movement following the release of a movie. Significantly it usually trades sideways before the release and then spikes the day of or the following Monday after the release and the weekend box office numbers come out.

I would say that it is not a bad speculation play to buy in just before the movie is released and put a stop on it before the market opens the following Monday.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is set to be released 5-1-2009
I am considering buying the stock and a put on it the day before.

To Seed Man and Upod and any other movie lovers out there. Looks like the reception for Watchmen might be turning up. The distribution company is Warner Brothers (aka Time Warner Inc., TWX)

After the midnight release of Watchmen, the stock decided to welcome more bulls than bears as of 2PM today. Currently the price for TWX is 7.36 (Opening and low of 7.12 and a high of 7.47). The stochastics and MACD indicate that the stock is way oversold and are turning upwards. I think this is something that we should "watch" after the box office numbers are reported Monday morning to see "who watches the Watchmen?" Sorry, had to do it. :)

Lookie, lookie what I found on the "inter-web." The Numbers is a box office tracking website that apparently gets updated daily. Here are the numbers for Friday night's movie ticket income. Judging by the numbers alone, A lot of people "watches the Watchmen." Sorry, had to do it, again. :)

Anyway, I can also atest to the successability of the movie. It has a lot for everyone, except the young kiddies. It should definitly draw a large crowd and hopefully it will draw a large crowd all weekend long. We should probably check out the numbers again on Monday morning before the market opens. If it continues this raking in of cash all weekend long, then maybe a position on the stock might be worth while.
