TradeKing would like to create a forum for everyone to find accurate answers to the simple, and not so simple, operational and service questions you might have about your TradeKing Account. From funding your account, all the way to placing advanced orders. So let's get this ball rolling and ask away! Sometimes the responses might be a little delayed because everything we write has to be pre-approved by our compliance department, but it won't be too bad! Thanks!

During the trading session today, my Streaming Quotes were turned off with no notice to me. When I inquired what happened, I was informed that my 30-day trial had expired......uh, ok, but right in the middle of the trading session?  What I would like to suggest, is that before you do that, could you send a notice to the customer informing them the trial is coming to an end and asking them if they would they like to renew? Since I make 25 trades a month, so they turned it back on, but that was a REAL inconvenience to someone who actively trades.  If you could respond to me with the action you plan to take on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Up until now,  my trading activity has been limited to buying and selling individual stocks.   How do I short a stock?   What are the account requirements and what steps do I have to go through to place the order?

Thank you for writing. I'm sorry to hear about the situation you experienced with our streaming quote product. I reviewed your particular situation and learned that in error, the quote service was not renewed by our third party provider. I apologize for the inconvenience this caused you.
We are working with our quote provider to make sure the right controls are in place so this does not happen again.
The other quote systems on TradeKing are all in real time. When you are using the option chains, getting a basic stock or option quote, or placing a trade, you are looking at all quotes that are real time. However I do understand that this is not by any means a substitute for a streaming platform.
I do apologize and if there is anything we can do other then assure you that behind the scenes we are making sure this won't happen again, please let me know.

I'd like to know if there's a way to do historic quotes and charts so that I can get a closeup look at historic chart data instead of a 1000 mile view. I'm probably just overlooking it.

Thank you for writing. Shorting a stock carries additional risk, relative to buying a stock to own, and then selling that same security. In theory, the most you can lose with that situation would be the amount you invested in that security. Say for example the company you buy declares bankruptcy and goes to zero the day after you purchase it. If the news comes out during trading hours, the stock is probably going to briefly halt trading, and then continue to fall all the way down to zero. Now if this news were to come out when the market is closed, you may be able to salvage some of your losses or you may lose everything you initially invested in that stock. Regardless, the worst case scenario is that the most you can lose is what you initially invested.
Shorting a stock is a completely different strategy. You would generally short a stock when you felt a particular security was going to decline in value. The idea is that you sell stock you don't own, which leaves your account negative that position. If the price of the stock goes down, and you buy to cover that same stock at the lower price, this brings your account back to zero. The difference between the sale and purchase price, minus commissions, would be your gain.
There are a couple things to keep in mind with shorting stock. It does carry more risk then purchasing a stock. When you sell a stock you don't own, you are borrowing it from another person. To make this example easy, imagine there is only one other person in the entire world with 100 shares of a particular stock. You decide you want to sell that stock short and you execute a short sale for 100 shares. Say a month passes, and the company actually had good earning instead of the bad earnings you anticipated, so the price has actually appreciated. However you still want to hang on to that position because you feel the bad earnings might come out next quarter. The risk here is that, if the person you borrowed that stock from decides to sell the position they own, that means you are going to get a notice from your broker that this stock is no longer available to borrow and you will be forced to immediately buy to cover your short position, regardless of the price of the stock. This is one thing to consider. You are probably wondering how often this happens. The answer is that it depends on several factors. It depends how many shares are outstanding and publicly trading, the daily volume, etc. It's more likely to happen with low volume thinly traded stocks, however it can happen to anyone selling short, at anytime.
The next thing to consider is that in theory your maximum loss is infinite. Say you sell the stock short at $20.00. The next night the company makes an announcement that they discovered a wonder drug that makes you live forever. That stock is going to skyrocket! As the stock appreciates the margin requirement will go higher and higher. So at some point unless you have unlimited cash flow and like losing money, you will have to cover the position, regardless of high it is. To summarize, in theory your maximum loss when selling short is infinite.
The next thing to consider is that selling short requires a margin agreement on your account. Having a margin account also open's up additional buying opportunities in your account and is a different conversation. With that in mind, there are a few pages you should read before you consider selling short. I have a link to our margin disclosure and agreement, please read that. There is also a link below to the TradeKing page that talks about stock parameters and margin requirement's for selling short.
The mechanics of actually entering a sell short order is pretty simple. On the TradeKing Trading Stock Page, you would simply enter Sell Short as the action. Then continue to fill the rest of the order ticket out like a regular trade. Sell Short opening trades can only be entered as Day Orders, not GTC. Keep in mind is that whenever you short a stock, the broker has to first make sure it's available to short. There are cases when it might not be. So please check your order status page after you enter the trade to see if the order was accepted. You can click on the link on the right for each order you place to see what the status is.

Wow!  Thanks for the quick and detailed response Dave.  Being relatively new to investing,  it will be a while before I'm ready to take on that type of risk.

Hello RetireOnTime,

To get to our charts, you have a few different choices. You can use the Quote Box at the bottom of your screen by clicking on the black button "Get Quote." There are menu choices at the bottom on the right side of the screen. Click on Chart.

You can also go to:

Quotes + Research Tab > Quotes + News + Research

This screen will give you current quotes and a plethora of other interesting information including a mini chart, an options summary, news headlines, and competitor details. At the top of this page, you will be within one click of historical news, company summary, financials, earnings, company insiders, detailed charts, and our stock screener.

Clicking on the Charts tab will get you into the screen you need. You can also get to this feature under the Quotes + Research Tab > Charts.

Your default chart may be set to a time frame of 1 year. The time frame that is selected is highlighted in TradeKing blue. To change the time, choose 1 day, 5 day, 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, YTD, 1 Year, 3 Year, 5 year, 10 year.

Under this menu are more customization features. You can select a time interval to view, style of chart, upper and lower indicators, and standard or log format.

Within the 1 and 5 day charts you can get intra day data from 1 minute to 30 minutes. On this page, we do not currently offer intra day data older than 5 days. However, this feature is available with our Streaming Platform

At the bottom of the chart, you can edit your settings, save your settings, and save specific charts.

We currently do not offer historical quotes on our site. As you probably know you can get real-time quotes at no charge.

Thank you for the reply Nicole, I've been using the quotes/news/research and TA charts and I think they work well.  I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a way to plot a 90-day chart from say 2005, instead of YTD.  Again, thank you.

Hi all, I'm new to TradeKing (been an Etrade guy for years & years) and have some general questions about how things work at Tradeking.  Q1:I bought a Call, then later in the day sold the same Call.  Then I had the amount of monies listed in the "unsettled funds" area.   I then tried to Buy another Call (same trading day), but received an "Order Rejected" notice (or some similar wording).  At etrade, I could trade (buy/sell/buy/sell) all day long as long as I didn't run out of funds.  They allowed this as everything will clear and will "NET" out.  Is this a problem for Tradeking?  Q2: I don't see a way to "CANCEL" an order (eg. Stop Order) once it has been placed but BEFORE it is actually executed.  I must be missing something somewhere correct?

Dear mrCheez,

Thank you for writing and checking out our new Community. You bring up a great subject for discussion. The unsettled funds question can get pretty in-depth and complicated, depending on the scenario in the account. The main factors that play into this scenario are:

1. Are you trading in a Cash or Margin account
2. Is the account coded with a Pattern Day-Trade Restriction
3. Is the account balance greater than $25,000.00

These are the things to take into consideration when you are looking into the frequency at which you can use your funds during the day. It would be hard for me to give a specific answer to your post without knowing that information. If you would like to contact us via a secure channel, you can call one of our brokers at 877-495-5464 and they could provide feedback as to your particular case. Here is a link to a section in our website that talks about using unsettled funds and daytrading. Please check out the section titled "Day Trading".

http://content.tradeking.com/wiki/display/tkservice/Disclosures

The other thing to keep in mind is that these rules are part of Regulation T and also part of the FINRA rules for Day Trading. All brokers are required to follow these rules.

The second half of your questions is a little easier. To cancel an open order, once logged in to your account, please navigate to the Trading drop down menu. The bottom selection on that menu should say "Order Status". This is the page where you can modify or place a request to cancel a trade. To the right of each open order, you should see what we call a "power button". If you roll your mouse over this button, a menu will pop-up that will allow you to modify the trade.

I hope that help and if you have more questions after you read the link above, please let us know.

Thanks

I am very impressed with your calculator and web-site so far.  Do you have any type of tool that shows premiums for writing calls or puts.  Thanks in advance for your time.

And by the premium, I mean in terms of high percentages.  Almost like a stock screener to find out where you can make the most for a covered call.

I would like to be able to use ACH for "on-demand" transfer into my IRA. Other brokerages allow this type of ACH transfer...

In this day and age, checks really are a relic of the past. The only other "person/business" that I write checks to is my ex-wife...

Option trades settle when confirmed. If I sell an option I can buy another afterwards. Stock trades take 3 days to settle. I dont trade often and I just opened the account here tonight. If I have 10k in my account and I buy a leap and hold it for 3 days and sell it at a profit and the option was 2 contracts at 4200 each or 8400 I should be able to use those funds after the trade is confirmed. If this is wrong I need to know before I fund my account. I am at scottrade now and never had an issue. Thanks.

Dear JA6JBI52RP,

Thank you for writing. Yes you are correct in that scenario you would be able to use the funds generated from the sale to buy another option contract. JBManning is also correct in saying that options, according to Regulation T, settle trade day plus one. If you sell an option, technically those funds are not available until the next trading day, if you wanted to withdraw them for example. You can however use the sale credit to buy a new option. The thing to remember here is that if you sell an option Monday, the funds are technically available Tuesday. If you buy another option with those funds on Monday, that purchase also settles on Tuesday meaning the funds are technically not due until Tuesday. So that's how you are able to use the funds right away. The important thing to remember is that you would not be able to sell the option you purcahsed until the following business day. If you did sell on Monday, this action would be viewed as a violation of Regulation T. So keep that in mind.

Please let me know if you have more questions about that. These questions are great. Please let me know if you have anything else!

Thanks
I've included a link to the Options Risk Disclosure for your review.
