The Otter Way

Over the last few months I’ve seen the righteous and all in knowledge attack the personal character of fellow traders. I have seen good hard working folks become obsessed with trying to be right over the common decency of their fellow traders. I have usually responded in kind with funny off the wall remarks, stupid and senseless retorts, and calmed the situation down… Yet this morning I find anger in my flippers and really want to flip off those with superior judgment who can’t resist taking on the trader… not the trade…

Boys…. The sandbox is for everyone… The rules inside the sandbox are easy to follow and clearly simple enough for young cocky traders and for those shy types like me…

•Attack the facts, not the person. Think twice before typing in anger. Disagreement on issues is fine; personal attacks are not. Offensive or hateful rants are never helpful…

So after reading the rules… I’ve decided that my own post violates the rules of engagement so I shall not continue with my “spirit of the quest”…

Well said Otter. Different stroke for different folks. Don't criticize something you have not tried or those that are trying something different. I trade completely different from Shap, OF, Coffee and many others but I respect their knowledge and often gain wisdom from their posts, but I don't take anything from this forum as gospel. I said in another post that everyone needs to find their niche trading style, test it to see if it works, and then trade the plan while keeping emotions in check.

If you liken trading to baseball, you have some who are content to bunt, some who will hit singles, others who will swing for the fence. Occasionally we all will strike out on a few trades, but the trick is to stay in the game and eventually come out a winner.

In the event that the Otter is offended by topical subject matter or heated debate that I've been involved in -

I get into it, very often with Owl, but others as well in topics regarding the economy and the way our government regulates & interacts with it.

These topics are unavoidable in the bigger picture of economics and policy that pertains to stocks and equities, and they are very often opined from a deeply personal perspective from, the point of reference to where they effect us, there will often be passion....granted personal jabs are at times uncalled for, but at the end we usually either find a medium or agree to disagree.

Those topical disagreements stay on those threads, neither myself Owl, or any others that I have taken a liking to debate with have to date brought any of the subject matter or petty grievances we might have into any other thread, barring one member past who would invoke irrelevant opinion on multiple threads aside from his own posted threads.

I have yet to have thought it wise to comment or complain if I thought another topic to be aloof, "cute" or silly, I just don't open the thread in that case.

This then reminds me what I've heard some say here in the past, you do have the option to not open & read a thread or topic you may not find agreeable, granted there are forum rules top curb angry posts & personal insult, but nothing to state we're not allowed to disagree or express opinions....but maybe staff will correct me on that perception if it's incorrect.

Item worthy of note, Owl and I still interact in private messages, despite the appearance of occasional anger, it might not be what some may think it is, sometimes life can be a little more complicated than a small furry creature might desire, but life goes on regardless.

Well noted Otter. I like the sandbox analogy. I for one appreciate and learn from positive criticism. To the contrary, negative criticism well,,,,,,,,, I believe ya get more with a teaspoon of honey than a tablespoon of vinegar.

Incubus... I can't say for sure but I am pretty sure Otter's comments were not directed at you. It is okay to disagree even to the point of a heated discussion. Just don't make it personal or an attack on the other party like some have done. They know who they are, and if they don't we would be wise to simply ignore their rants.

Dear fellow traders, I have left the names of traders out of original posting for one particular reason, not to attack the trader. So far within the realms of this posting; I have found no poster in offense so great to cause my flippers to stand in a single digit position. I truly enjoy heated discussions; yet I find it offensive when the act of someone offering advice is taken as an act of recklessness and being labeled a careless act; yet, in the same breath I do remember the parting words of Maria who lost several thousands of dollars following the advice of others…

For this reason and this reason alone, I’ve quieted down my support of positions on stocks, industries, as well as overall market conditions and have become more silent in guidance to others. I just know that personal attacks take the fun out of the forum and thought I’d share that perspective today.

Sorry, I couldn';t resist.

My favorite person to chat with in this forum has always been Owl, and you wouldn't guess that by the extreme differences in our perspectives at a glance if you skimming one of our infamous threads.

I get a lot out of exchanges with him, amongst others, for the fact that we have such differing views, but a symptom of those differences can be heated exchanges at times (and this newer guy PRD so far), the recent topic on economic theory and my doubts over their reliability have been particularly enlightening, but to someone just skimming the thread it could look pretty ugly.

Just wanted to be clear, there are jabs on occasion, but I think for the most part those who regularly participate in that type discussion in this forum is really looking for enlightenment & exchange of idea's vs Otters concerns with righteous, angry indignation....most of us.

Beats the heck out of Google, Yahoo or AOL chats & forums any day, where you're constantly ignoring web cam solicitations and kids playing games vs real discussion, here people have an interest in substance, not always pleasant, but substantial nonetheless.

Ouch, ad nauseum. What does this have to do with anything?

The back and forth between Owl and Incubus leaves me cold and wanting to look elsewhere for community.

However, with Otter back I am heartened.

Here is what I am interested in:

What are the facts related to diamonds in the rough, timings of FDA bull-****-ish-ments, and the probability that the hard-working folks in bio-tech are about to produce something remarkable?

This is the meat of the discussion.

The narcissistic self-indulgence can please take a time out.

So, where do we go from here with this?

Move forward productively as a group, or descend into adolescent nipple twisting and spiral downward, over and out?

Owl and Inc. have been matching wits since the day I have been here. They are like Walter Matheau and Jack Lemon in "Grumpy Old Men"...............they just complete each other. When you think one has upped the other with his educated rebuttal, the other comes back with something even more intelligent and thought out, they amaze me. I wish I had they're patience, lol.

Hope you stick around Otter, as well as Coffee. I think most of us here know whom you are referring to. He needs to work on his tact a bit for sure, maybe you can recommend a good book for him. Just my opinion, I don’t think he would be happy if you and Coffee left the forum, he has said repeatedly that it was not personal.

One of your quotes, “Risk… the actions taken by investors that can pay great rewards… or cause extreme loses” Pretty easy to understand even for a newbie.
