Veneratio, Owl is a Professor of Philosophy, I think he enjoys debating those that disagree with him, and has no trouble holding his own. Hopefully, his absence is temporary!

Ven "knows" Owl well (as well as a fella can know another in an online forum).
I've had the distinct privilege of having some of the lengthiest, passionate debates with Owl that anyone on this forum has....replete with "cute" jabs, but we always were able to exchange laughs in private messages at least.

Owl...if your peeking in, let us know your ok, we need intelligible debate for cryin' out loud!

Dudes, you could PM me, you know.
Thanks for the concern. I've been busy. I like talking with all of you, but the forums have just taken too much of my time. I already have tenure, but I need to expend more of my energy on academic argumentation to promote my career. Also, I rented a car from Avis and crashed it into a tree. I deliberately took their overpriced insurance first, so I could crash the car with impunity. It's going to take a while, I have to work one car at a time, but I think I'll get that stock price down below $5 before July options expire.

It wasn't that I thought you weren't among the quick, it's that I was afraid you crapped out shorting them ETF's.  Now I better get some sleep, and dream of some counterexamples.

Be careful Owl, there’s a guy here who wants to debate philosophy, I think if you catch him when he’s sober might give you a run.

No, the etf shorting strategy is rock solid. It's the car crap that has been taking my money.

owl, what do you think regarding shorting the new Macroshares leveraged ETFs that just started trading today - UMM - 3 X Bull and DMM - 3 X Bear. The way I read it, these are based on the Case - Schiller index and the index is updated only once a month. So the ETFs should fluctuate between updates which is what the shorting needs

Thanks, Coffee. Already got the helmet in place.

Yeah, sounds like more than one. I'm happy to discuss philosophy, but only the parts I know. I'm working on a paper about infinity. Anyone for discussion of the limitless infinite? Yes, they pay me to discuss stuff like that.

Well, it sounds like it should work, just as shorting all leveraged ETF's does. However, I'd have to watch the history over a while to see if it is as volatile as the other ETF's. If they only rebalance monthly, then it's a better investment than the ETF's that rebalance daily (i.e., it's less of a shorting candidate).

Only the mind is infinite, the physical world has boundaries. When we think the physical is infinite we limit our infinite mind to the physical boundaries.

Livin' you got to read a little modern physics, we've moved a little beyond Newton.  And although space is curved, it is also limitless, which means their is no center of the universe, no matter what Mommy told you.

There are several examples of physical infinities. The extent of space, the past, the future, the number of points on a line, and of course the singularities of relativity theory (though these are problematic and controversial).

I may be way behind on my theoretical physics, but I thought that the universe was expanding, which would suggest a limit to space.

Both the past and the future are arguably mental constructs - you would have develop or find some type of proof to show that that which does not exist in physical reality in the present, does in fact physically exist.

The number of points on a line is a mathematical construct. Both points and lines are imaginary entities that we created to describe the universe.
