Welcome to Thunderdome

This post is started at the request of NasdaqSavages who uses technical analysis in his trading. The challenge is to use T/A to trade a stock with a positive outcome. Let's say the goal is to earn 10% over the next year and you can buy or short stock or be long or short options. You may not have a naked short call option. You must maintain a position of at least $1000 for the entire year. Lets give you a 25K bankroll to work with so you are not handicapped by being underfunded. Here is the stock: Las Vegas Sands (LVS)

Simply post your positions as you enter and exit and we will see where you are at in a year. Also, I would like to see your reasons, using T/A of course, for buying or selling.

Here is the current chart:

Sorry I'm so late. I got called into work at 6 this morning (I was supposed to have the day off) But any how.. I like the rules. Let me pull up the chart and go to work..

Ok.. here is my set up.
So pretty basic set up here.
The three circles represent your reverse head and shoulders
The red downward sloping line is your neck line. On 8/16 we broke the neckline (bullish)
The yellow line is where we stopped today which is no coincidence because that is where resistance lies. From 7/19 high. So that is our first hurdle.
The upward sloping green line is your uptrend. I add to a bullish position every time we test that line and bounce. If we break this line I sell. And consider going short.
The light red line is my initial target. At which time I will reevaluate.
My second target is the highest red line. At which time I will reevaluate.

All this being said I bid 25 shares at market. Getting my first thousand in the game. After we break above 42.14 I will start to open an option position

So 25 shares at 41.34
is  $1033.50'

Let the games begin.

FYI, to illustrate why technical charting alone without research can lead to pain, Sheldon Adelson is currently under investigation by Chinese officials for bribery.

His Chinese "secret sauce" may have spoiled, also, if found guilty he may face FCPA charges here in the U.S.

Ok so end of the day accounting

$25,000.00 cash
    -1033.50  25 LVS shares @ 41.34
    -    56.00  1 - 8/24 LVS 41 put @ 56.00

End of day account
23,910.50   cash

54.00         1 option (- 2.00 )

25,000.50 ACCOUNT VALUE

Bought the put because I don't like the daily candle we formed today on LVS
Also, the SPX is at resistance and could be toppy.
LVS will not be immune to MARKET RISK.

Nasdaq -

Don't forget commissions. Lets make this as close to real world as possible. I will let you forego the few cents charged by the SEC.

$25000.00
-$1038.45 (25 x 41.34 + 4.95)
-$61.60 (56 + 4.95 +.65)
------------------------------
$23899.95 cash
+1035.75 stock (25 shares @ 41.43)
+54.00 (put value)
----------------------------------------------------
$24989.70 your closing value of account

Looks like Obama wants to play the T/A game. Are you up for a little competition Nasdaq?

Obama - if you are going to play you are limited to only LVS. Take the other stocks off the board.

To make this interesting I will play along. I will start with a buy of 100 shares at 41.34 (your opening price). I will adhere to the same rules.

TJ's LVS account -
$25000
-4138.95 (100 x 41.34 + 4.95)
---------------------------------
$20,861.05 cash
+4143.00 (100 @ 41.43)
-------------------------------------
$25004.05 closing value

Good luck

Start of Week:

25 LVS shares
1 - 41 LVS put
$23,889.95 cash
total account value - $24,989.70

So here's my action plan this week for LVS:

I am initiating a GTC M.I.T. order for 50 shares at $42.20
I am initiating a GTC M.I.T. order for another 50 shares at $42.40
Will begin building a bullish option position at the same levels.

To technically explain these orders you have to go back to 7/19 - 7/20/2012
I want to own the stock above this these levels with an initial target of
around $44 ish. I will provide a more accurate price as we approach the level.

I also want to hold my put until expiration or sell it at the 42.20 level. (which should leave it around worthless). But I want to hold protection until we break above $42.00 because should we breakdown here the only support is the uptrend and then the $38 area.. Thats a long way from here. Also we failed to hold 42 on Friday in a pretty dramatic way.

The chart one more time. (a closer look)

wow.
That was a move .
So thats 100 share at 42.90 (2 commission charges ; 2 different orders)
ORDERS EXECUTED

For proof of price and time of trade I will capture a real time snippet of LVS from
http://finance.yahoo.com/quotes/lvs

I will post this within one minute of my mock execution. That way I can not copy snippets throughout the day and pick the best price. It will look like this:

TampaJake said: Obama - if you are going to play you are limited to only LVS. Take the other stocks off the board.

I'm not sure if that's the most interesting way to test TA. Charts need time to setup after a trend if broken/trends need time to form.  I don't like to start a position without a good hypothesis of what's going to happen based on what the TA is telling me.

That's why it's nice to hop around stocks because of the cashflows and setups.

However, I'm up $145 on my 100 shares of LVS - not going to do options since it's harder to price/prove on the fake trading. if you're only going to trade LVS maybe you do need options like straddles and strangles.

Disclosure: I've been trading with TA almost exclusively the whole year - up 13% YTD.
I only use fundys for the safer portion of my portfolio (AGNC, MCD, DUK currently). However, I still use TA to give me macro stop losses.

Selling 77 of my shares at $42.87

$20,861.05 previous cash
+ 3296.04 (77 x 42.87 - 4.95)
-----------------------------------------
24157.09 new cash balance
986.01 values of 23 shares at 42.87
---------------------------------------------
24143.10 (new balance)

End of day accounting

100 shares @ 42.90 + 4.95 + 4.95 = 4290 + 9.90

$19,610.60   -CASH
$5,357 .50    -125 Shares of LVS
$14                - 41 PUT

$24,982.10 ACCOUNT VALUE  (-$7.60)

Again, scary daily candle.. I wanted to buy the ATM puts at the close but I was not at the computer to mark it. But I do believe we close the gap. Maybe tomorrow maybe the next day. But the 42.ish level must hold for me to remain confidently in the trade.. Why was this name up so much today??? How has this not come up yet today??

Correction to my balance at time of the trade: $25,143.10

End of day balance for 8/20: $25,142.87
I am not planning on trading any shares on Tuesday.

Looking to lighten up on some of my shares at 43.80 - 44.00 dollars. Technically it should act as an area of resistance as seen in my charts as they light red line that goes back to 7/5/2012.

End of day accounting
