I've heard Tax Laws are in the process of changing since 2011. What's new for tax reporting?
You can find this answer and more here in our new Educational Tax Center.
Starting in 2011, the IRS now requires brokerage firms to report cost basis for positions initiated in "covered securities" for taxable accounts. This change applies to purchases (long positions) and short sales (short positions) initiated after January 1, 2011.
This means a couple of changes for you:
1. The 1099 will now show Gains and Losses for "covered securities"
2. Gains and Losses will now be reported by your brokerage firm to the IRS for "covered securities."
