Otters Jan 2010 100K SmartEEEE Pant EEEE's Official Entry Posting...

Posted by The Otter Way on December 29, 2009 (10:13PM)

Who can make the most money on paper during normal U.S. Market hours for the month of January 2010?  Can you beat the last bunch of Smarteeee Pant EEEEEE’s who embarrassed more than just their mother?

Can you beat a monkey who throw’s a dart, an otter who flips crayfish shells and where they land….?  Can you beat players like Tampa Fake, Beirut Bob, Hooters, Dark Socks, and silly players like SP… Who would call themselves missspelled?

This month, Trade King will award the winner of this contest “The Options Play Book”, by Brain Overby… and one free stock trade… This was offered by Big Doggie…

Rules… Simple, easy, and it does not cost you any money to play…

· All stocks and options can be played. Shorting is allowed if on the day to announce your short… the symbol appears on the available short list of Trade King…  The trader is limited to a maximum of 3 stock symbols, and a minimum of one.  Allocation (shares/contracts) is to be determined by the trader…

· Your imaginary Trade King account will contain $100,000.00 U.S. Dollars.

· You must post your stock picks to this forum topic no later than 7:30 a.m. eastern time on the first trade day of January 2010.  For the purpose of this contest you will not be able to exit this trade until the last tick of the last trade day in January 2010 (prime-time).  That last tick will be for all purpose your exit price.  Your post will need to include the following…

a). Stock Symbol, b). #shares/contracts, c). price, d). Why you selected the stock…

· When accounting for stock transactions, you will not need to add contract or trade fee’s to your entry price (buy-in) or your exit price (sell).

· All purchases will be considered as GTC (good till Cancel) but we will not allow any Cancels… So we will call this Good Until Filled.  Any moneys that never got applied will be added to the total your ending balances.

· Each day we ask all traders to post their results to this forum topic… You will use the market close (prime-time) last tick.

· It’s okay to make fun of other traders… attack the trade… but don’t call them names…

Well, mean names….

· If in the opinion of Otter, if she thinks you’ve exceeded decency or fairness, she can remove you from the contest… So, play nice, have fun, and don't leave skid marks in your Pant EEEE's... there Girlie Boys...

My official entry; VGE AE

4,000 contracts

.25 limit (I will take this as my buy in even if opens lower)

I think this stock is way undervalued, even before losing 2.00 in share price since Sept.

I don’t use stop loss or strike price for my trading, rather take it as it goes. If this were a longer term trade I would go deep in the money, including real dollar trades, but I did put up one of my leaps for this in real life 1 for 21if exercised, see where it goes.

I am going to sit this one on a side and enjoy the view, here are a few comments

  • Everything in trading has a size associated with it. As an example El D is buying 4000 options in GE, Jan 2001, 25 strike. Even something liquid as GE, current size for these contracts is 111/147. Trying to buy 4000 options will move the market in a big way
  • I used El D's trade as an example however I am not pointing a finger at hm, everybody has the same problem. The rules of the contest should deal with it or ignore it
  • El D - again this is just my thinking but for the purposes of this contest it is over by Jan 31. Even if GE moves big way in the next 30 days, Feb options will respond much better (they have higher delta and less time) then LEAPS and Feb 2010 is much cheaper than Jan 2011

  • There in lies the problem, to truly reflect the timing and the selections, one must really have a live practice account to be real.  Your observations are well noted.. It would be an administrative nightmare to attempt to track a contest...

I will miss your participation and hope you will change your mind.  This will be the last one hosted by me...  I do agree with a lot of the comments posted... I worry that we are providing a non-world look at investing and might be giving a wrong impression of what real trading is like.

I will allow Trade King to consider changes to it's software for practice accounts.  That would be an area where outsiders might join as well as Trade Kingers to practice change of style trading... Computer Assisted training is far better than paper.

Good point OF, even with 100 contracts I have had to wait for a fill.

As for the LEAP vs February, this is strictly a play on time value, no way do I believe GE will move enough to hit a 25 strike in one month. I do think it possible for them to do it by Jan 2011.

I could move the strike close or ATM for Feb and make a much larger gain if the stock moves up, but I’ve been burned so many times with short term options even for this game I will take a pass.

I was thinking of sitting this one out since I have some trepidations (previously voiced) and frankly I’ve been rather preoccupied with life matters that have taken my attention.  Anyway, after reading that this is Mme. P’s farewell to the joust I thought how could I not join in for a final hurray.

My choices all come from my portfolio, although I own the underlying and not the options.  My choice of taking the options is strickly due to the fact that I expect they may have more propensity for a shortterm pop than the stock.  Obviously I hope that PFE will be helped by the finalization of whatever halfassed package comes forth or dies.  I don’t expect much one way or the next in change of healthcare delivery.  JWN will prove that Christmas wasn’t a total bust for everyone and who doesn’t wear underwear and socks?

    33250*1.00       buy JWN Feb 40

    16000*2.10       sell  PFE Feb 20p

    17000*1.95       sell HBI Feb 25p

    total 100000

    Let the wild rumpus begin

Posted by The Otter Way on January 03, 2010 (09:54AM)

Here are my selections…  Current Portfolio Position:I am long onty/gnvc

                    Onty…

                       500 Kkq ea @ 1.40   = 70,000  (may 10 strike 5.00)

                    GNVC

                    24000 GNVC @ 1.25   = 30,000

Onty has several milestones that are coming up..  We are in death watch waiting a mid-term number of deaths to get our first glance at phase III data.  We are looking for partnering on multiple potential revolutionary product line that has great potential.  I do believe onty is the play… But I am concerned this may be one month to early… As you see, I see I did take the May 10 ITM calls.  So I do expect a value from this investment in January… I am looking for a 10 to 32 to 1 in Mid June.  I would be happy with a 3/1 return.  At the time that I typed this there were over 1,000 open contracts available.

Gnvc is also on death watch.  We are waiting a mid-term number of deaths to get our first glance at phase data.  The preliminary results on earlier phases show great potential as well as the rest of the product line.  Again, my concern is it may be to early, but with Asco registration coming due… I would suspect that I will get a bang on both stocks because of Asco and as results become available.

There is no difference in the my personal style or my judgment between the contest and the way I normally trade… In one account… I am all in ONTY as well as my other… all in GNVC.

I have selected to bid higher than current values in hopes of getting into the contest… I do expect ONTY to pop very early so I’m not sure I will win the bid on it…

The one thing that I would be leery of  with GNVC/Onty… Is good news might also breed additional stock offers with justification for expanded trials… So this one in real life, my finger would be on the sell button every minute; and if they offered additional shares.. I would sell, and buy back in after retracements.

It looks like only 3 people have entered so far. I better add an entry. I would put 100% in a short sale on SRS, market price at open, to be covered at market close at the end of the month.

SRS is the ProShares 2x leveraged bear etf for the real estate sector. I have previously mentioned how you should short leveraged etf's, which are virtually guaranteed to decay over time, especially the bear etf's. Furthermore, I think real estate is recovering. So SRS would be one of the worst investments I can think of at this time. I would like to do DRV (the 3x leveraged one from Direxion), but it is not available for shorting.

    So here's my offical entry....

    AAPL:  250 shares  @ $210.73 ... $52,682.50

    VZ:     1000 shares @ $33.13....... $33,130.00

    MOT:  1,828 Shares @ $7.76....... $14,185.28

TOTAL $99997.78..... I should have at least $2.22 at the end of the contest.

As I am fairly new to trading, I'll just bet on CES 2010 January 7-10, 2010 in, the most appropriate location, Las Vegas.  I'll stick with Thursday's close 12/31/2009.

    Good luck,

P.S. I own all of these stocks in another account.

I'm buying 12 puts on Cree because this stock has gone through the roof since mid-summer. My other stock is LUV, I think they are going to come out with good results in Q1, which I believe is in late Jan 2010. Gold should start to go backpu as long as the dollar stays weak.

    Buy Cree puts: Feb $ 50 (CQRNJ) @ 1.30  x  350  =  $ 45,500

    Buy Luv calls  Feb $ 12  (LUVBL)  @  0.35  x 1442  = $ 50,470

    Buy Auy call  Feb $12 (AUYBG)     @  0.50  x  80  =   $ 4,000

    total = $ 99,970
